Adventurous Applique with Aurifil Thread AND a Giveaway!

This month is an applique month where the Island Batik Ambassadors had to do some creative stitching around applique with our sponsor, Aurifil Thread. Scroll to the bottom of the post for the Island Batik giveaway link.

I created a design using Electric Quilt and Pro-Stitcher Designer for the Applique, SVG file to cut with my Brother Scan and Cut as well as a secondary quilting design. This quilt will be about 59" square.

I got to use this collection for this quilt.

How pretty is this? I used 10 out of the 20 fabrics for this quilt.

I really wanted to learn how to use my Brother Scan and Cut to cut applique, so I used this opportunity to do so. IT was AMAZING and so very easy. Not quick, but very easy.

After I cut out my applique, I gathered the fabrics for the rest of the piecing.

I did not use fusible for the applique, I starched the applique before cutting and then glued onto the background fabrics with Elmer's kids glue stick.

I used Aurifil 40 wt. thread to do the applique on my Janome M7 machine.

I tested out the stitching on my fabrics. Always test!

I matched the thread for each applique with Aurifil Thread.

I pieced the chain blocks (oops, no pics).

Here is a video of my applique on my Janome M7. The machine was MADE for activities such as this.

Keeping the workspace flat is KEY to applique turning out nice.

And the Quilting commenced.

In the empty blocks, I added some secondary quilting that is subtle and gives a bit of a hidden design that complements the applique. I used Hobbs Silk batting. I LOVE this batting. It is a bit of a splurge, but so worth it for its drapability.

Binding is next, and I used my Juki to quickly add the binding .

And off to do a photo shoot. this is the fun part: finding a place to take some fun pics. It is getting to feel like fall, and the days here in NW Washington are smokey. So, I headed to the Harbor to get some interesting pictures.

The first is hanging over a bench.

And then we got this great shot with a local seagull flying over:

I hope you enjoyed the process and plan to see what I and the other Island Batik Ambassadors come up with next month!
